In a competitive field Manufactor stood out for an individual approach to sustainability in its broadest sense. The development of a manufacturing destination shows a strong commitment to localised production and employment in a broader context of decline and importation of goods from overseas. The refurbishment of the centrepiece copper manufacturing plant Meltor acts as both a project focus and an educational resource, restored with verve and a commitment to show future generations the physical evidence of the history of manufacturing. Its retention together with the renewal of surrounding industrial buildings contrasts with the knockdown rebuild business as usual approach. The use of solar power generated from the huge industrial roofspaces currently yields 3GW, with the intention of extending to 5GW, making the project self-sufficient in energy. The playful use of old bicycles, rescued from going to waste, as bollards and traffic control devices is a visual signature of the marriage of reducing waste with public art. The precinct has created a destinational food and beverage experience attracting visitors, locals and workers to 'stay local' and experience its strong and sustainable sense of place.
